Technology can level the playing-field at work

The modern workplace comprises far more than a maze of workstations, the buzz of staff members regulated by set working hours, staff canteens, board room meetings and coffee carts.

Technology, particularly mobile and wireless, has encouraged a fresh approach to career development within a new generation of employee one that prioritises balance between job responsibilities and life outside the office.

The increase in the number of mobile professionals, employees that aspire towards higher levels of service and delivery through technology, suggests progress within the age-old quest for balance in life the search for natural equilibrium between responsibilities at work and personal time.

Work/life balance is loosely defined as being a renewed appreciation for the need to spend more time with family, pursue personal objectives and interests, and balance this with employment and career responsibility.

It is a global trend fuelled by the availability and affordability of personal mobile digital products which provides instant connectivity to the office from anywhere at any time. There is a blurring of the lines between personal and business time that does need to be controlled, but which, managed properly, allows for a flexible lifestyle without compromising on productivity.

One of the primary objectives driving the business of software solution and service providers is to help businesses to align themselves, and to adapt to this new dynamic in HR.

Technology is inextricably linked to our daily existence. We are dependent on it, albeit on various levels. From a corporate point of view, our mission is to improve levels of efficiency of existing systems or, through strategic installation, replace specific systems. Our intention is to contribute towards a more organised, more streamlined environment, which would allow for flexibility, customisation and ease of use. This is advantageous as far as HR strategy is concerned, explains Teryl Schroenn, MD at Accsys, a national supplier of HR and payroll management solutions.

It stands to reason that a more organised, more technically efficient environment promotes a higher level of mobility, and removes some of the pressure from HR, adds Schroenn.

Companies are certainly reviewing their technical capability and available resources and infrastructure. There is a better understanding that a mobile professional adds to productivity levels and represents an asset to the business. Our job is to make sure that the back end of the business, the supporting resources and general daily operations, continue as normal, and are conducive towards a mobile environment, she concludes.
