Panda Software has warned users about Oscarbot.KD (CME-482), said to be the first worm that exploits the Microsoft MS06-040 vulnerability to infect systems, allowing a remote attacker to take a series of malicious action on compromised computers.

Through the global network of TruPrevent sensors, PandaLabs says that it has detected a number of incidents involving this new worm, albeit not on the scale of an epidemic.

According to Jeremy Matthews, MD of Panda Software SA, Oscarbot.KD searches for computers with the MS06-040 vulnerability. If it finds them, it causes a buffer overflow on the system and executes the code needed to download a copy of itself onto computer in a file called wgareg.exe. However, Oscarbot.KD can also spread using the AOL instant messenger service and across shared drives.

When the worm is installed on a computer, it opens port 18067 and connects to certain IRC servers. This could allow a remote attacker to communicate with Oscarbot.KD to download and run all types of software on the compromised computer or launch attacks on other computers, among many other actions.

Moreover, the worm creates a service in the system with the name wgareg or wgavm, which aims to simulate a genuine Windows software authentication service. The name of the service could be 'Windows Genuine Advantage Registration Service' or 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Monitor'. The explanatory texts of the service are: Ensures that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine and registered. Stopping or disabling this service will result in system instability or Ensures that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. Stopping or disabling this service will result in system instability.

Finally, Oscarbot.KD edits a series of Windows registry keys to disable the firewall included in certain versions of the operating system.
