Investcom, which was recently acquired by the MTN Group, has announced the commercial launch of GSM mobile telecommunications services in Afghanistan.

The GSM network covers Kabul, Mazar, Kunduz and Jalalabad, and will soon expand to other cities across Afghanistan.

Investcom subsidiary, Areeba Afghanistan, was awarded a 15-year licence in September last year, and is the third mobile operator in Afghanistan. With mobile penetration currently at around 3% in a country of approximately 30m people, there is a high demand for telecommunications services in Afghanistan.

We are very excited to have launched GSM mobile telecommunications services after several months of preparation. Investcom is committed to providing the Afghan market with a quality network, says the project director in Afghanistan, Mohamad Toufic Ramadan.
