With the DPH-50U, users will be able to enhance their Skype Internet Telephone Service as the unit is designed to allow users to use existing corded or cordless telephones to take advantage of Skype's low cost calling features. So says Tiens Lange, D-Link brand manager at Pinnacle, who adds that using an existing telephone improves voice quality and enable users to deploy the telephone's built-in features such as speed dial, redial, mute and caller ID. Further, using a cordless phone unties the user from the desktop, he adds.
"The DPH-50U allows users to accept both regular and Skype calls from the same phone offering added flexibility," says Lange. "If the user is talking to someone on a regular call and they receive an incoming Skype call, they can easily switch lines to take the Skype call or vice versa."
Users can also do a conference call between regular telephone and Skype lines, he adds. "For added convenience, the DPH-50U includes a help LED display that indicates whether the incoming call is regular or Skype.
The unit can be configured to forward incoming Skype calls to another destination such as a cell phone which means users will never miss incoming calls, he says. The DPH-50U also includes a toll bypass feature that is said to be suitable for the following two scenarios:
- If a user is in the same geographical area as the DPH-50U and wants to make an international call, they can call from a Cellphone to the DPH-50U-enabled PC and make a low-cost SkypeOut international call, Lange says.
- The other scenario is when a user is travelling abroad and wants to call someone who lives locally. Users would simply make a Skype-to-Skype call to the DPH-50U-enabled computer and use a regular telephone line to make the local call, he adds.
The DPH-50U includes two RJ-11 ports and a USB port designed to connect the regular phone line, telephone and computer, respectively. Since the unit receives power from the computer through the USB cable, it does not require a power adapter, he says.
