The Hub is one of eleven projects of the Gauteng Provincial Governments Blue IQ initiative to invest in economic infrastructure development in the province. Through Blue IQ, the provincial government has invested R318m towards infrastructure development in the Hub.
The Innovation Hub was welcomed to the international science park community by Sten Gunnar Johansson, international board member of the International Association of Science Parks (IASP). The election of its CEO, Dr Neville Commins, onto the International Board of the IASP during 2003 further enhanced the levels of interaction with science parks worldwide.
The Hub initially operated at a temporary pilot site since late 2000. During its pilot phase, many of the concepts and value-added services aimed at launching the main development as a 'growing concern were identified and tested. Commins says that the move to the new site has been tightly managed, and that the development is on schedule and within budget. In addition, The Innovation Hubs empowerment targets have been maintained throughout, he says.
Alan West, ICT consultant to the Hub, worked with a number of players, including Cisco and Telkom, to deliver the infrastructure and level of ICT to meet present and future high-tech tenancy requirements.
The Hub is currently negotiating with private sector partners to establish sectional title buildings at the precinct. Construction of one or more of these is expected to commence in the next few months. This initiative stems from established market demands from medium-sized companies wishing to own their space within the high-tech community.
